5 Clever Free Agent Signings For Manchester United

TLDR

🔧 The budget maths and the no-brainer at the back

Right then. Howson opens with the lay of the land at Old Trafford, and it's the usual mix of money and worry. United have borrowed, cleared some debt, and they'll spend this summer. But spending isn't the same as competing. To build a squad that can actually go again next season, the cash has to stretch, and stretching it means at least one shrewd free agent pickup.

Here's where the money's going. Ederson is done at 38.8 million. Fernandez is in advanced talks, though Howson isn't sold on the price (he'd be shocked if United go the full 80 million, reckons 60 to 75 is sensible). Left back search is live. The striker question still hasn't been answered. Most of the budget lands in midfield, no surprise to anyone. Which leaves the gaps to be plugged cleverly. Enter the free agent market.

His first name, and what he calls the biggest no-brainer on the list: Oscar Mingueza. Twenty-seven, Spanish, Celta Vigo, contract up at the end of the month. A right back who can play center half, invert into midfield, and fill in at left back at a push. Composed on the ball, progressive passer, solid in the duels. Arsenal, Juventus, Aston Villa and Newcastle have all been linked, he's on plenty of top 20 free agent lists, but nobody's pulled the trigger yet.

Why United? Versatility and depth across the whole back four. Mazraoui's availability has been patchy. De Ligt can cover right back but does a poor job at left back, certainly nothing like Mingueza. A free transfer for a 27-year-old La Liga starter who plays three positions, costing only wages that won't be mental. Howson's blunt about it: if United let him sign for Villa or Newcastle, they've been outsmarted by clubs scouting on a fraction of United's budget. Get him in.

🎯 The striker gamble and the creative cover

Number two is the big one: Dusan Vlahovic. Twenty-six, Serbian international, leaving Juventus on a free after they paid 85 million euros for him in 2022. Sixty-eight goals in 168 appearances. A physical number nine, good hold-up play, clinical finisher. One of the most contested transfers of the summer, and for good reason. Bayern (where he'd sit miles behind Harry Kane), Barcelona (to fill the Lewandowski hole), AC Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle all circling.

The killer, supposedly, is wages. He wants 8 million euros a season plus bonuses, more than Sesko reportedly earns. Howson's take: a 26-year-old with 68 goals in three and a half seasons in a top-five league, free instead of a 60 million transfer, is worth a phone call. He'd structure it with a signing-on bonus rather than a monster base, reckons 150 to 175 grand a week is the ballpark. Nobody's paying 8 million as a base, certainly not United. Recent injuries are why everyone hasn't jumped already. Vlahovic and Sesko as your two up front next year? Not a bad spot.

Number three: Julian Brandt. Twenty-nine, German international, Dortmund have confirmed they won't extend, so he leaves free. An elegant creative number 10 who can play the eight. Roma are favorites (per Bavarian Football Works), Fenerbahce interested with big wages on offer. Why United? A proper backup to Bruno in that exact role, the rotation they've been crying out for. Mount has tried, hasn't worked. Brandt's experienced and technically perfect, and free is outstanding value. United's trump card Roma can't match: Champions League football. Move fast.

⏱️ The ones who got away and the verdict

Number four: Harry Wilson. Twenty-nine, Welsh, Fulham contract up June 30th. Just had his most productive Premier League season ever, 10 goals and six assists, Fulham's player of the season. Left-footed inverted right winger who can play left or as a 10, excellent on set plays, dangerous from range. Fulham have offered a new deal, he hasn't signed. Villa have been in advanced talks since March. Leeds, Everton and Wrexham linked, plus a Liverpool report. Why United? Depth, Premier League proven, low cost, a set-piece specialist they've been missing. Villa are favorites, but if that stalls and he fancies the Champions League, worth a look.

Number five: Leon Gretzka. Thirty-one, German international, Bayern have confirmed they won't renew. Box-to-box, goal threat from late runs, good in the duels, leadership. But Howson's honest: it feels all but done to AC Milan. Allegri likes him, talk of a three-year deal. When the details start leaking like that, it's happening. If United wanted to disrupt it, he'd be a phenomenal short-term Carrick rotation option, but the issue is purely timing. United needed to make that call a month ago.

The verdict: Gretzka's gone, so don't bother. The realistic two are Vlahovic or Mingueza, both adding depth and steel. The dream scenario is landing a midfielder like Gretzka alongside Fernandez and Ederson, which would mean United actually improved. A pipe dream, maybe. But he points at Christian Eriksen as proof the free market throws up gems if you keep looking.

The real lesson buried in all this: free agents go to whoever moves first. United keep showing up last.
